Anwar Shemza, Square Compositions 2, 1963, 61x61cm, Oil on Hardboard, Courtesy of Jhaveri Contemporary
Jhaveri Contemporary evolved from the curatorial projects and initiatives of Amrita Jhaveri, who played an integral role introducing Indian artists to galleries in the UK. In 2010, Amrita Jhaveri produced Anish Kapoor’s first public exhibition in India in collaboration with the British Council and the Government of India. That same year, Jhaveri held two solo exhibitions by artists Simryn Gill and Michael Mueller in a converted apartment in Mumbai. Over the past two years Jhaveri’s projects have evolved into a full-scale gallery based in Mumbai, and representing artists across generations. The gallery has become known for the quality and rigour of its choices as well as for the elegance and sensitivity of its installations.
