Residents

Art Dubai 2020 will feature the third edition of Residents, dedicated to solo presentations from invited galleries whose artists take part in a 4-8 week residency in the UAE. The programme encourages artists to immerse themselves in the local art scene and create a body of work which merges their distinct artistic practice with their surroundings. For the third edition, Residents will focus on Sub-Saharan Africa and will be curated by Johannesburg based independent curator Kabelo Malatsie.

Kabelo Malatsie worked as an associate in the curatorial team at Stevenson gallery in Cape Town and Johannesburg from 2011 until 2016. Her Master’s degree in Art History from the University of the Witwatersrand explores alternative funding and institutional models that are rooted in their viability within a South African context. Kabelo also holds an Honours degree in Curatorship from the University of Cape Town and an undergraduate degree in BCom Marketing Management from the University of Johannesburg. She was a participant of Independent Curators International’s Curatorial Intensive in Accra in 2017 and the 9th Berlin Biennale Young Curators Workshop in 2016.

Participation in Residents is by invitation only.

Residents is supported by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation
