ART WEEK EDUCATION PROGRAMME

New in 2011-12, the Art Week Education Programme features a series of seminars which aim to give additional support to young people in the UAE. The series focuses on the world of contemporary art and design, offering access to experts within the field, practical advice, and the chance to network with previous interns, like-minded students and recent graduates.
The Art Week Education Seminars will resume after Art Dubai 2012 and will run year-round.
PREVIOUS SEMINARS
Not-for-Profit Art Sector: Speakers talked about the different ways of supporting artists in developing their practice through residencies, commissions and foundations. Guest speakers included Alexandra MacGilp (2012 curator-in-residence, A.i.R Dubai); Bashar Al-Shroogi (executive director of curatorial affairs and senior art consultant at Cuadro); Dr Lamees Hamdan (commissioner for the National Pavilion of the UAE at La Biennale di Venezia) and Mandy Merzaban (collections manager and curator at Barjeel Art Foundation). The session was chaired by Salwa Mikdadi (programme head - arts & culture, Emirates Foundation).
Contemporary Design (February 12, 2012): Speakers from the design industry discussed topics including the upcoming launch of Design Days Dubai; the daily life of a design gallery; and collecting and commissioning design. Guest speakers included Cyril Zammit (Fair Director, Design Days Dubai) and Mitra Khoubrou (Partner, Pink Tank); and making special video guest appearances: collector Rana Sadik; designer Kwangho Lee; Pascale Wakim (Co-Owner, Carwan Gallery) and Grégory Gatseralia (Co-Owner, SMO Gallery).
Gallery Management (January 15, 2012): This seminar saw gallery directors discuss the daily working life of a contemporary art gallery; working with artists; how galleries support the local arts scene; and the relationship a gallery has with critics, collectors, and audiences in general. Speakers included Sunny Rahbar (Co-founder, The Third Line), Hetal Pawani (Director, thejamjar) and Asmaa Al-Shabibi (Director, Lawrie Shabibi). The session was chaired by Myrna Ayad (Deputy Editor, Canvas Magazine).
Introductory Session (December 4, 2011): Attendees had the chance to hear about Art Dubai 2012, Design Days Dubai and other Art Week initiatives, as well as learn more about the Art Week internship scheme for 2012.
