Art Dubai would like to thank our esteemed 2012 jury:

Khalid Shafar – A graduate of the American University in Dubai, Khalid worked in marketing and communication for almost seven years before following his passion for design, graduating from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, UK, then studying at the Centre for Fine Woodworking in Nelson, New Zealand. Over this time Khalid acquired the skills and techniques integral to bespoke furniture making and craftsmanship, and defines what he creates as contemporary and quirky interior design objects with stories to tell. Recent exhibitions include Qubique, Berlin, with Carwan Gallery; Tokyo Designers Week, as part of Dubai Futures; and Inspirationalists, a solo show at Pavilion, Dubai (all 2011).

Zayan Ghandour – Co-founder, creative director and head buyer of s*uce, an institution in independent fashion retail in Dubai, Zayan has become highly regarded for her extensive work in fusing international aesthetic with local influence and giving rise to a new wave of local and regional designers in the UAE. A designer at heart, Zayan has just launched her eponymous label, with her first Spring/Summer collection expected to be in stores internationally by March 2012.  She is also co-founder of fashion distribution agency & consultancy, Two Scoops.

Manabu Ozawa – As the Japanese designer behind some of Dubai's most acclaimed art meets fashion projects, Manabu’s creations can be seen in fabrics such as the popular t-shirt design with emblematic face of Sheikh Zayed, photography and minimalist interiors for a new concept store, his D.I.Y approach ensuring he is an acknowledged and revered polymath of artistic talent. Manabu moved to Dubai in 2003 and joined cutting edge collective 9714. In 2008 he was involved with the launch of Shelter with Ahmed and Rashid Bin Shabib, and later became Art Director of Brownbook Magazine.

DXB Store History
Over the past decade, there has been an explosion of creativity in the UAE, with young designers and artists, working predominantly in home studios, experimenting with locally-produced materials to produce limited edition objects, artists' multiples, clothes and other design products. Many of these practitioners, mostly Emirati nationals and long-term residents, were first featured in and commissioned by the concept store 5 Green (2004-9, run by 9714 and designed by DXB-LAB), and then by other boutiques and galleries, including 50 degrees C, s*uce, Shelter, Traffic and The Third Line.

In 2011, Art Dubai launched DXB store, a not-for-profit space designed in collaboration with the College of Architecture, Art and Design, the American University of Sharjah (AUS). The DXB store was launched as a pop-up initiative, aimed at showcasing the innovative work of UAE-based creatives.
