A unique opportunity for artists from the Middle East, North Africa & South Asia (MENASA)
The Abraaj Capital Art Prize is designed to raise awareness of innovative and experimental work being created by artists working in the MENASA region. Founded in 2008 by the Dubai based private equity company, Abraaj Capital, each year the prize gives selected artists the opportunity to produce new, ambitious works. Once completed, the works become part of the Abraaj Capital Art Prize Corporate Collection. Works are unveiled in March at Art Dubai, the region’s largest contemporary art fair and go on to be exhibited at a range of venues internationally. An independent, globally recognised curator will curate the exhibition at Art Dubai and work closely with the artists on their art projects.
Abraaj Capital: Investing in Foresight
Abraaj Capital is the largest private equity company in the Middle East. Based in Dubai, it invests across the MENASA region and is committed to giving back to the region from which it has generated such success. As well as the art prize, Abraaj set up an endowment to which it donated US$ 10 million to finance the education of almost 1,300 Palestinian children and youth who lost parents in December and January during conflict with Israel. The aim of the prize is to empower potential and give often under-represented, contemporary artists from the vibrant MENASA region the resources to stretch their talent. The prize gives them a global platform to showcase their works and their region. The prize reflects Abraaj’s own investment philosophy, which is to take viable businesses with great potential, and create regional and global champions.
The Abraaj Capital Prize 2011
Artists currently working in the MENASA region are invited to submit a proposal for an art project taking into consideration the guidelines listed below. Five submissions will be selected for the Abraaj Capital Art Prize and each of these will receive a figure to cover; production costs, installation costs, catalogue, shipping and travel for the artist. Included in the budget will be a fixed fee of $7,000 for the curator. The final art projects will be unveiled at Art Dubai in March 2011.
